MUSEUM QUALITY Antique 1890s John Forrest Sterling Silver & Enamel Pocket Watch

Description

An exceptionally rare, museum-quality historical artifact, this substantial 151-gram solid sterling silver pocket watch stands as a masterclass in Victorian horology and royal commemorative artistry. Crafted by the esteemed John Forrest of London—officially designated as the “Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty”—this timepiece was likely commissioned as a bespoke royal presentation or high-level commemorative piece during the late 19th century.

The Case & Enamel Portrait Measuring a massive 57mm across and 21mm thick, the heavyweight sterling silver case features spectacular coin-edge detailing and deep, crisp engine turning along the bezels. The true masterpiece of this watch rests on the case back: an impeccable,  polychrome enamel miniature portrait of Queen Victoria . Depicted in her widow’s weeds with her signature white veil, small diamond crown, and the sash and star of the Order of the Garter, the enamel work is breathtakingly vibrant and remarkably preserved, free from the heavy crazing or chips commonly found in pieces of this vintage. The inner case back displays clear, crisp British sterling silver hallmarks and the maker’s mark “AM” .

The Dial: the watch features a magnificent two-tone solid silver dial. The center is richly hand-engraved with an intricate floral and foliate motif, complemented by applied gold-tone Roman numerals that catch the light beautifully. The dial is completed with a beautifully sunken subsidiary seconds register at the 6 o’clock position and blued steel hands.

The Movement Beneath the silver dust cuvette  lies a fitted brass movement cover beautifully engraved with the maker’s signature, “John Forrest / London,” and the serial number 8042 . Removing the cap reveals the immaculate, fully gilded full-plate movement . It features a highly decorated, hand-chased balance cock with a beautifully set jewel end-stone, polished blued screws, and the proud engravings: “LONDON E.C.” and “CHRONOMETER MAKER TO THE ADMIRALTY.”

Historical Context John Forrest was a highly regarded English watchmaker whose precision instruments earned him official contracts with the British Royal Navy. Timepieces bearing his name and Admiralty title are highly sought after by serious horologists. The inclusion of a flawless royal enamel portrait elevates this watch from a precision naval instrument to a bespoke historical treasure, representing the pinnacle of British imperial craftsmanship during the heights of the Victorian era.
