Description
I am pleased to offer from my private collection this remarkable and rare example of early horological artistry, this antique automaton pocket watch features a charming enamel dial depicting a rustic water mill scene, complete with a functional animated waterwheel that moves with the mechanism—a delightful automaton feature designed to bring the dial to life. Key Features: • Dial: Vivid enamel depicting a country watermill, complete with animated rotating waterwheel automaton at 6 o’clock. Roman numerals mark the hours, with finely crafted gilt hands. The artwork shows incredible detail, featuring trees, mill buildings, and flowing water. • Case: Intricately engraved silver case with floral and foliate designs and a blank cartouche, surrounded by a warm gold-filled trim. The back cover displays exceptional repoussé and engine-turned craftsmanship. • Size: Approx. 46mm in diameter, excluding the crown. • Movement: Swiss-made 15-jewel movement, featuring cylinder escapement and manually operated automaton mechanism. Regulator marked Avance / Retard (French for Fast / Slow), indicating Swiss or French production, likely late 19th to early 20th century. • Crown and Bow: Ornate onion-style crown with original bow, typical of continental designs. • Case Marks: Includes hallmark and serial stamps inside the case back indicating Swiss silver standard and manufacturer origin (Garante and other Swiss assay markings). Condition: Well-preserved for its age. Minor wear to the gold-filled trim and some patina to the silver, adding to its antique charm. The automaton wheel mechanism remains visually intact and functional when the movement is wound. This piece is not just a timekeeper but a miniature mechanical artwork—a testament to the golden age of automaton watchmaking and a rare treasure for collectors of animated horology or scenic dials.
The watch comes with AN APPRAISAL CERTIFICATE FOR $1500
