Antique c1890’s Gothic Memento Mori Silver Pocket Watch with Rare Digital Second

A fascinating and rare late 19th century silver pocket watch featuring a striking Gothic memento mori dial with skull and bones motif. The watch is signed by Gg. Kohn, Würzburg and dates to around the 1890’s

The porcelain dial is adorned with a finely skull and crossbones, a symbolic reminder of mortality typical of memento mori art. The outer minute ring is accented with stylised skeletal bone markers. A highly unusual digital seconds display sits at the 6 o’clock position, visible through a small circular aperture.

The case is crafted in solid .800 silver, fully hallmarked inside the back cover with German silver marks, serial number 117583, the maker’s stamp GALONNE, and the silver fineness mark. The outer back cover is decoratively engine-turned with a central shield cartouche surrounded by ornate scrollwork.

The movement is a traditional lever escapement with gilt plates, signed Gg. Kohn Würzburg, and remains in good antique condition.
