Antique Gilt Verge Fusee Calendar Pocket Watch Vatican Pope Pius VI c1790’s

I am pleased to offer from my private collection this rare antique 18th Century gilt  Verge Fusee CALENDAR  pocket watch and matching long skulls&bones chain fob specially made for the Vatican city cabinet of Pope Pius VI c1790’s.

The watch has a highly ornamented 24k gilt (gold plated) Ormolu Bronze hand chased  oignon shaped case. The case depicting on the front side an image of San Gennaro(Saint Januarius) an written in Latin “IN SANGUINE FOEDUS”. The rear case depicting a smiling skull. The skull symbolize the transience of human life.It means that it doesnt matter if you was knight ,bishop or pope-the exit is one and the same for all. This all should remind to the Pope himself that he is mortal too. On the case is written  the famous Latin Motto “Sic Transit Gloria Mundi” that means “Thus passes the glory of the world.” It has been interpreted as “Worldly things are fleeting.” The phrase was used in the ritual of papal coronation ceremonies between 1409 (when it was used at the coronation of Alexander V) and 1963.As the newly chosen pope proceeded from the sacristy of St.Peter’s Basiclica in his sedia gestatoria , the procession stopped three times. On each occasion a papal master of ceremonies would fall to his knees before the pope, holding a silver or brass reed, bearing a tow  of smoldering flax . For three times in succession, as the cloth burned away, he would say in a loud and mournful voice, “Pater Sancte ,sic transit gloria mundi” (“Holy Father, so passes worldly glory!”) These words, thus addressed to the pope, served as a reminder of the transitory nature of life and earthly honors.

The watch has an amazing fine enamel dial with the original hands.

The watch has an amazing fire gild verge fusee movement-all hand made and hand finished by the master- hand pierced and engraved balance cock.  PERFECT WORKING ORDER!!!  (do not expect a quartz accuracy from 230 years old watch) The watch is 53mm in diameter,34mm thick.
