Description
I am pleased to offer from my private collection this an extraordinary and rare example of late 19th-century horological artistry, this Victorian pocket watch circa 1890s features a gilt silver case of exceptional detail and symbolism. Dial: The enameled dial showcases a hand-painted scene with a romantic medieval couple, vividly rendered in polychrome. The Roman numeral chapter ring surrounds a detailed miniature painting, lending this piece a unique narrative charm. Case: The reverse of the case is a striking memento mori motif, depicting a skull surrounded by an ouroboros snake, an ancient symbol of death, rebirth, and the eternal cycle. This high-relief design is finely cast and dramatically presented, reflecting the Victorian fascination with mortality and the macabre. Movement: Swiss lever escapement movement, marked “Ancre Ligne Droite – 15 Rubis”, finely jeweled and in perfect working order. The engine-turned inner cuvette is signed “Spiral Breguet” . Features: • Gilt silver hunter-style case • Hand-painted enamel dial • Mechanical movement with 15 jewels • Memento mori & ouroboros symbolism • Diameter: Approx. 48mm • Circa 1890s • Working condition A true collector’s piece, ideal for those with an appreciation for symbolic art, esoteric motifs, and Victorian-era Swiss horology.
