Description
A rare and symbolic antique Victorian gilt silver pocket watch dating to circa 1900, featuring a striking Memento Mori motif on the case back — a skull-and-crossbones above a banner reading MEMENTO MORI, Latin for “Remember that you must die”. This phrase was a philosophical reminder of mortality, common in late 19th and early 20th-century art, jewelry, and timepieces, symbolising the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living virtuously.
This example is housed in a sturdy gilt silver hunter case, adorned with fine engraved detailing. The dial is classic Victorian style — white enamel with black Roman numerals, ornate gilt hands, outer minute track, and a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock.
The watch is powered by a quality Swiss “Lecture” calibre movement marked Brévet S.C.D.G., adjusted via a micrometer regulator. The mechanism is in clean condition and winds and sets smoothly.

Historical Note:
During the Victorian era, Memento Mori symbolism experienced a revival in watches, jewellery, and art. Such designs were especially popular among Freemasons, scholars, and gentlemen of philosophical leanings, serving as a daily reminder of life’s brevity. Timepieces with this motif are scarce, particularly in original condition, making them highly collectible today.
