Description
An exceptional and highly esoteric piece of early 19th-century French horology. This magnificent antique pocket watch features a solid silver case heavily plated in 18k gold (gilt silver), but its true masterpiece lies on the reverse. The case back is entirely hand-engraved with an incredibly comprehensive array of Freemasonry symbols, serving essentially as a portable Master Mason’s tracing board.
The intricate engraving features the All-Seeing Eye radiating light, the Sun, Moon, and Stars representing the heavens, and the prominent Square and Compasses resting upon an open Volume of Sacred Law. Flanking the central altar with its three burning tapers are the great pillars. Scattered throughout this meticulously detailed scene are the working tools and emblems of the craft: the Plumb, Level, Trowel, Gavel, the Sword pointing to a Naked Heart, the Key, the Ladder, the Winged Hourglass, the Scythe, and the Spade. This level of customized, hand-chased fraternal artwork indicates it was likely commissioned by or presented to a high-ranking officer or Master of a Lodge.
The Verge Fusee Movement
Opening the rear cover reveals a stunningly preserved, traditional French verge fusee movement. Before the advent of the modern lever escapement, the verge fusee was the standard for high-end timekeeping, utilizing a micro-chain and conical gear to equalize the mainspring’s power. This movement boasts a beautifully hand-pierced and floral-engraved golden balance bridge (coq) alongside a silvered regulator dial. True to early French design, this watch is wound directly through the white enamel dial using the provided key.
