ANTIQUE ART DECO Lucien Gaillard Platinum 0.61ct Diamond Engagement Ring -Signed

Description

Presented for acquisition is an exceptionally rare, museum-quality antique engagement ring crafted by the illustrious French master jeweler, Lucien Gaillard (1861–1942, Paris, France). Born into a distinguished Parisian jewelry dynasty, Gaillard’s grandfather, Amédée Alexandre Gaillard, founded the family firm in 1840. Lucien trained as an apprentice under his father, Ernest, before assuming control of the renowned workshop in 1892.

A prominent contemporary of René Lalique and brother to the famed furniture designer Eugéne Gaillard, Lucien was a transformative figure in the French decorative arts. His unparalleled craftsmanship earned him a prize at the prestigious 1889 Universal Exposition in Paris, and he subsequently served as a judge at the 1893 Universal Exposition in Chicago. In 1902, his monumental contributions were recognized when he was knighted into the Legion of Honour. Today, Gaillard’s masterpieces are permanently housed in the world’s most prestigious institutions, including the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum.

This specific piece beautifully captures the rigid geometric elegance of the Art Deco era. The interior of the platinum shank bears Gaillard’s personal hand-engraved signature, elevating this engagement ring from a piece of fine jewelry to a highly collectible historical artifact.

Detailed Condition & Macro-Photographic Report

This historical masterpiece has been meticulously preserved. Please refer to the detailed macro photography provided for a precise visual inspection:

  • Overall Presentation : High-magnification top-down views reveal the crisp, colorless brilliance of the central diamond and the sleek geometric lines of the tapered baguette side stones. The platinum setting perfectly complements the icy aesthetic of the Deco period.

  • Shoulders & Band : This angled profile highlights the smooth transition from the diamond-set shoulders down into the polished platinum band, demonstrating excellent structural integrity.

  • Gallery & Undercarriage: The side profile exposes the elevated architectural gallery and the robust, secure prongs holding the center diamond, allowing maximum light return through the stone.

  • Hallmarks & Purity : The interior of the shank features a clear “PLAT” stamping, verifying the ring’s solid platinum metallurgical composition.

  • Master Signature: The most critical aspect for provenance—the interior of the platinum shank features the distinct, hand-engraved signature of “L Gaillard”, authenticating its origin from the master’s Parisian atelier.

  • Scale & Proportions : Presented on a mannequin hand to accurately demonstrate the ring’s classic elegance and balanced proportions when worn at a size 6.25.

Condition Summary: Excellent antique condition. The structural integrity of the solid platinum carriage remains robust and unthinned. The diamonds are entirely secure within their original settings, showing no chips or abrasions. Surface wear to the platinum is minimal and commensurate with careful ownership.
