Description
Presenting an exceptionally rare and museum-grade artifact of antique horology: an early 19th Century (c. 1790s) French 18k gilt “Ormolu” bronze Memento Mori Doctor’s desk clock. Crafted by the renowned French watch master Pierre a Rouen, this extraordinary piece transcends traditional watchmaking, standing as a masterclass in philosophical art, medical symbolism, and high-end mechanical precision.
Accompanied by an official appraisal certificate for $35,000.00, this investment-grade artifact is a crown jewel for any serious collector of rare complications or historical antiquities.
Design & Symbolism
The clock is masterfully cast in the form of a heavily gilded Ormolu bronze skeleton representing the Grim Reaper. The figure sits in a contemplative posture atop a heavy, solid black mahogany wooden base. In its right hand, the skeleton commands the Caduceus staff scepter (also known as the Rod of Asclepius or the Staff of Hermes)—the universally recognized symbol of medicine and healing.
Standing at a highly impressive 38cm tall, the statue is a commanding presence in any room, library, or executive office.
The Timepiece: A Dual-Purpose Marvel
The true genius of this automaton-style housing lies in the skull. The top of the skeleton’s skull is hinged and opens to reveal a pristine, hidden timepiece.
In a magnificent feat of horological engineering, the entire skull head can be easily removed from the skeleton’s cervical spine. It is fitted with a bow ring, allowing the skull to be detached and worn independently as a striking Memento Mori pocket watch on a chain.
