Description
An Unparalleled Artifact of Napoleonic and Horological History We are honored to present a truly extraordinary and exceedingly rare antique French pocket watch: a magnificent Solid Silver Verge Fusee Quarter Repeater, created in Paris circa 1805 by the celebrated Lepine workshop. This watch is a dual masterpiece, merging high-complication French watchmaking with the personal imperial iconography of Napoleon I. Items of this significance, bearing direct symbolic connection to the Emperor and from this prestigious maker, are almost exclusively held in museum collections (such as the Louvre, Château de Malmaison, and the British Museum).

Historical Context: Lepine and the Imperial Cipher (c. 1805) Lepine à Paris: Jean-Antoine Lépine (1720–1814) was one of the most innovative and celebrated watchmakers of his time, holding the title of Horloger du Roi (Clockmaker to the King) for Louis XV and Louis XVI. Even after the Revolution, his workshop continued to set the standard for precision, elegance, and complication. Watches from this era bearing the Lepine à Paris signature represent the apex of French horological craftsmanship.

The Crowned ‘N’: Circa 1805, Napoleon I was at the absolute zenith of his power, having just crowned himself Emperor in 1804. Iconography from this specific period (such as the personal imperial cipher—the crowned letter ‘N’) was reserved for the highest level of official presentation pieces intended for the Emperor, his family, or extremely high-ranking dignitaries and officers of the First Empire.

Visual and Technical Description (Based on Photos) This artifact is a stunning example of both high art and high mechanics.

Exterior: The Hand-Engraved Silver Case The large, heavy solid silver case is a superb piece of early 19th-century silversmithing. The front of the case features fine decorative engraving around the dial bezel. The reverse, however, is the highlight: a magnificent, deeply and flawlessly hand-engraved portrait of Napoleon I in profile. Depicted in the classical Roman tradition with a laurel wreath and in full imperial uniform, this engraving is an exceptional work of art, full of fine detail and sharpness (Images DSC_0138, DSC_0139, DSC_0147). The entire back of the watch, surrounding the portrait, is covered in detailed, neoclassical border engraving. The inside of the case back bears serial number N. 121, matching the movement (Image DSC_0143).

Interior: The Monogram Dial The pristine white enamel dial is exceptionally clean and is a canvas for imperial symbolism. It features elegant, black Arabic numerals and a clear minute track. The centerpiece of the dial is the striking and ornate Crowned ‘N’ Monogram, executed in black enamel, personalizing the piece directly to Napoleon I (Images DSC_0132, DSC_0146). The watch retains its original, elegant blued steel hands.

The Movement: A Complex Masterpiece (Signed Lepine à Paris N. 121) Opening the case (Image DSC_0140) reveals a magnificent, complex movement of high finish. This is a Verge Fusee mechanism with the main fusee chain visible and intact. The main plate is clearly and beautifully engraved with the maker’s signature: Lepine a Paris and the specific matching serial number N. 121 (Image DSC_0145). The movement is equipped with a high-complication Quarter Repeater system, which chimes the hours and the quarters on internal gongs at the press of the crown. The balance bridge is a work of ornate piercing and engraving, a testament to the level of craftsmanship from the Lepine workshop.
