Description
A rare and striking 19th-century French silver pocket watch featuring an exceptional Memento Mori design. The back of the case is beautifully chased with a gilt-highlighted skull entwined by an Ouroboros serpent, symbolizing mortality and eternity.
The enamel dial depicts a vivid Krampus scene—a mythological figure carrying a child in a basket—rendered with remarkable color and detail. The Roman numeral chapter ring is clean and elegant, perfectly complementing the bold imagery at center.
Inside, the watch houses a Cylindre huit rubis (cylinder escapement, 8 jewels) movement with fine Geneva-style bridges, characteristic of mid-19th century French craftsmanship. The interior cover bears the inscription “Gaston & Rivière”, likely the original retailer or finisher.
This timepiece measures approximately 44.7 mm in diameter and comes with its matching winding key. A truly evocative example of early symbolic horology—blending Gothic art, mythology, and fine watchmaking.
