Description

An Exceptionally Rare and Museum-Grade Antique Hebdomas 8-Day Miniature Boudoir / Carriage Clock (c. 1900)

Overview: Presenting an exquisite and exceptionally rare find for the discerning horological collector: a stunning turn-of-the-century Hebdomas 8-day miniature clock, housed in a magnificent Art Nouveau repoussé bronze case. Standing at a delicate 8cm high, this piece marries exceptional Swiss mechanical ingenuity with the very finest in Belle Époque European casework. It is preserved in immaculate, perfect antique condition.

Historical & Technical Context: The “Hebdomas” patent remains one of the most celebrated innovations in early Swiss horology. Originating in La Chaux-de-Fonds from the brilliant mind of Irénée Aubry in 1888, the design was later refined and popularized by Arthur Graizely and ultimately Schild & Co. The revolutionary design utilized a massive, oversized mainspring barrel that occupied the entire rear of the movement, allowing the timepiece to run for an astonishing 8 days on a single wind.

Equally iconic is the Hebdomas visible escapement. By inverting traditional movement architecture, the balance wheel and its beautifully engraved bridge are proudly displayed at the 6 o’clock position on the dial, allowing the owner to watch the “heartbeat” of the clock in perpetual motion.

The Dial: The pristine white porcelain enamel dial is a masterclass in delicate artistry. It features crisp Roman numerals and is flanked by exquisite, hand-painted polychrome floral garlands in vibrant pinks, blues, and greens.

  • Signatures: Clearly signed “HEBDOMAS” in red.

  • Indices: Features the classic multilingual 8-day designations: “8 JOURS / 8 TAGE” and “8 GIORNI / 8 DIAS”.

  • Escapement: The exposed balance wheel rests beautifully beneath an intricately hand-engraved gold-gilt bridge, flanked by the R/S (Retard/Slow) and A/F (Avance/Fast) regulation scales. The enamel is flawless, with no visible hairlines, chips, or restorations.

The Case: The case is a miniature architectural triumph of the Art Nouveau period, crafted in bronze/gilt brass. It features highly detailed repoussé (relief) panels on all sides.

  • Motifs: The side and rear panels depict romanticized, classical mythological scenes featuring elegant female figures and playful putti (cherubs) in pastoral settings. The detailing of the drapery and foliage is exceptionally sharp.

  • Structure: Fluted columnar corners, a traditional hinged carriage handle at the top, and four turned feet complete the aesthetic. The heavy gauge of the metal and the depth of the casting elevate this far beyond standard novelty clocks of the era.

Condition Report:

  • Cosmetic: Perfect antique condition. The case retains a beautiful, rich, unpolished patina that highlights the high-relief artwork. The enamel dial is pristine.

  • Mechanical: Running strong and keeping excellent time. The balance wheel swings with excellent amplitude. (Note: As with all antique timepieces, regular servicing is recommended for optimal long-term performance).

Dimensions:

  • Height: 8 cm (approx. 3.15 inches) including handle.

  • Size: True miniature / boudoir proportions.
