Antique Victorian 18K Gilt Silver Memento Mori Skull Poison Ring – “Carpe Diem”

A rare and exquisitely crafted Victorian Memento Mori poison ring, dating to the c.1880s, featuring a beautifully modeled 18k gilt silver construction adorned with multiple skulls and symbolic motifs. This striking ring opens to reveal a concealed compartment—traditionally associated with mourning symbolism, sentimental keepsakes, or the classic “poison ring” folklore.

The exterior lid is boldly engraved “CARPE DIEM”, while the interior displays “MEMENTO MORI” accompanied by an engraved radiant sun and hand motifs, symbolizing mortality, time, and the fleeting nature of life. The band itself is richly decorated with raised skulls and textured scrollwork, all intact with wonderful aged gilding.

A true conversation piece and an excellent example of late-Victorian fascination with mortality, symbolism, and secret compartments.
