Historical Context: J.W. Benson & The Victorian Era

J.W. Benson was one of the most prestigious watchmakers in Victorian London, holding royal warrants to Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, and the Tsar. This watch was likely commissioned to commemorate a significant royal event, such as Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee (1887) or Diamond Jubilee (1897). The enameled portrait depicts the Queen in her later years, wearing her iconic white widow’s veil, Order of the Garter sash, and royal orders.

The “Half-Hunter” (or demi-hunter) case style features a small window on the front lid surrounded by an outer chapter ring of Roman numerals. Originally designed so gentlemen on horseback could read the time without opening the watch, it later became highly favored by doctors and medical professionals for easily taking a patient’s pulse.

The inside covers bear clear English hallmarks: the Lion Passant (indicating .925 sterling silver), the Anchor (for the Birmingham assay office), and the maker’s mark “A.L.D.”. The outer front cover features black enamel Roman numerals around the observation window. The case shows honest, light surface wear consistent with a genuine antique of its age.
