Description
An exceptional and highly collectible 19th-century ladies’ presentation pocket/pendant watch, beautifully preserved in its original wooden luxury box. Measuring an elegant 33mm in diameter, this timepiece is a remarkable showcase of late 19th-century Swiss horological craftsmanship and artistry, featuring an intricately hand-engraved silver case and a superb hand-painted enamel miniature.
The Case & Enamel Miniature
The 33mm case is crafted from high-grade solid 0.935 silver, which is a higher purity than standard sterling. The entire surface is meticulously hand-engraved with fine engine-turned and foliate motifs. The focal point of the caseback is a stunning, vividly colored hand-painted enamel miniature of the Madonna and Child, elegantly framed in gold. The inside of the caseback is fully hallmarked with the Swiss “Bear” stamps indicating 0.935 silver purity, the serial number “558287”, and the maker’s mark “K&L”.
The Dial & Hands
The watch features a pristine white enamel dial accented with delicate, hand-applied gold foliate decorations. Time is indicated by classic black Roman numerals and elegant blued steel hands. The dial is protected by a deeply scalloped, hand-engraved silver bezel that perfectly frames the face. The time is adjusted via a traditional pin-set mechanism located on the case edge just right of the crown.
The Movement
Powering the watch is a bright, well-preserved antique Swiss mechanical movement. It features a keyless stem-wind and pin-set mechanism, typical of higher-quality presentation watches of the era. The bridges are clean, and the gearing is fully visible, reflecting the high standards of late 19th-century watchmaking.
The Presentation Box
This remarkable timepiece is accompanied by its original retailer, luxurious wooden presentation box. The lid is stamped with the retailer’s historic markings: “PRESENTED BY ERNEST GOODE’S Wholesale Watch Stores” Complete with the brand’s trademark logos and the historic London address: “70 CHANCERY LANE, LONDON, W.C.”
