Description
We are exceptionally proud to offer a true museum-grade horological artifact: a spectacular and exceedingly rare late 19th-century “Mystérieuse” (Mystery) silver pocket watch, measuring an impressive 53mm.
Striking an incredible balance between mechanical ingenuity and visual magic, this timepiece features hands that appear to float freely in the center of a transparent glass dial, completely disconnected from any visible mechanism. This watch is a pristine example of the “A.S. & F.” (Armand Schwob & Frère) mystery watches, bearing the explicit patent engraving from June 22, 1888.
An essential acquisition for the advanced collector of rare complications and horological curiosities.
Historical Context & Provenance
The “Mystery” watch is one of the most enchanting complications in antique horology. Originally pioneered in clocks by Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin (the famous illusionist) in the mid-19th century, the miniaturization of this complication for pocket watches was a monumental achievement.
This specific piece utilizes the celebrated system patented by Armand Schwob & Frère (A.S. & F.). The prominent engraving on the heavily decorated front bezel reads:
“A.S. & F. / MYSTÉRIEUSE / Breveté. 22. VI. 88. / S.G.D.G.”
The “Breveté 22. VI. 88” refers to the official patent date of June 22, 1888. The “S.G.D.G.” mark (Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement) is the standard patent nomenclature of the era. The illusion is achieved by hiding a crescent-shaped mechanical gear train within the very edge of the silver case. This movement subtly drives two transparent, toothed crystal discs that comprise the dial. The hands are mounted directly to these rotating discs, creating the mesmerizing illusion of floating without a central pinion or visible escapement.
