Historical Context: The Legacy of Revue Thommen

This timepiece carries the DNA of one of Switzerland’s most important instrument makers. In 1859, Gédéon Thommen and Louis Tschopp acquired the company and privately restructured it. Gédéon Thommen, also the founder and promoter of the Waldenburgerbahn (a steam train connecting the valley’s villages), eventually took sole control, renaming it Gédéon Thommen’s Uhrenfabriken.

From 1905, the company was commercially registered as REVUE THOMMEN AG. The “REVUE” name had been used earlier for the company’s wristwatches, previously marketed as “GT” watches. In 1916, the company created the first aircraft chronograph for the Swiss Air Force, laying the foundation for its massive success as an aircraft instrument supplier.

Between 1936 and 1943, Revue Thommen developed and supplied crucial cockpit instrumentation for the Swiss Air Force, including altimeters, airspeed indicators, vertical speed indicators, clocks, and the landing gear for the Swiss multifunction biplane EKW C-35. By 1945, REVUE THOMMEN commercialized its technical capabilities in the aviation sector by launching specialized pocket altimeters for alpinists and parachutists—a testament to the mechanical durability and precision engineering found within this exact pocket watch.
