This is not just a timepiece; it is a piece of Napoleonic history. The case back features a finely hand-engraved portrait of Napoleon I in his neoclassical “Augustus” style, crowned with a laurel wreath. This imagery was widely popularized following his coronation in 1804 and was a symbol of French imperial power.
The movement is handcrafted by Peter Sattler, a prestigious maker from Freyburg. Sattler was known for high-grade horological work during the transition from the late 18th-century “onion” styles to the thinner, more elegant Empire designs.
Movement & Mechanical Details
-
The Verge Fusee: A masterpiece of pre-industrial engineering. It features a chain-driven conical pulley (the fusee) designed to equalize the force of the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring consistent timekeeping.
-
Hand-Engraved Balance Bridge: The movement features a stunningly intricate, pierced, and hand-engraved balance bridge.
-
Low Serial/Movement Number: Engraved “No. 118”, indicating a rare, early production run from Sattler’s workshop.
-
Functionality: Unlike many antique fusees that are purely decorative, this watch is in perfect working order. It includes a matching key for winding and setting the time.
Case & Dial Aesthetics
-
The Case: Substantial solid 10K gold construction, weighing a heavy 96 grams(total weight). The 55mm “oversize” diameter gives it a commanding presence in the hand.
-
The Dial: Pristine white enamel with elegant Breguet-style Arabic numerals. It features a unique outer track of stars and dots.
-
The Hands: Original “beetle and poker” style hands with intricate starburst or snowflake-patterned piercings—a hallmark of high-end continental craftsmanship of this era.
Condition Report
-
Movement: Exceptionally clean; starts ticking immediately upon winding. The fusee chain is intact and healthy.
-
Dial: Excellent condition with no visible hairlines or chips.
-
Case: Light age-related patina; the engraving of Napoleon remains crisp and highly detailed. The hinge is tight, and the bezel snaps shut securely.
