HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & PROVENANCE This is an exceedingly rare, museum-grade piece of naval history. During World War I, the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial German Navy) forever changed the nature of naval warfare with its deployment of U-boats. For a submarine commander (Kommandant), a highly accurate chronograph was not a luxury—it was a critical piece of combat equipment.
Before the advent of modern electronic targeting computers, captains relied heavily on precision chronographs exactly like this Union Horlogère. By starting the sweep-second hand the moment a torpedo was fired, the captain could calculate the exact distance to the target, determine the speed of enemy vessels, and measure the precise time to impact. This watch was an instrument of survival, navigation, and calculated precision beneath the waves.
THE DIAL The watch features a pristine white enamel dial loaded with striking military and patriotic iconography. Time is marked by distinct, easily readable Arabic numerals, a practical necessity for quick legibility in the dim lighting of a submarine control room.
At the 9 o’clock position is a bold Iron Cross, and balancing it at the 3 o’clock position is a detailed silhouette of a WWI-era U-boat. Above the bottom sub-dial reads the patriotic inscription “Alles für Deutschland” (All for Germany). It features a 30-minute chronograph register at the 12 o’clock position and a continuous running seconds register at 6 o’clock. The elegant gilt/rose-gold tone hands contrast beautifully with the blued steel chronograph sweep hand.
THE CASE The massive 51mm case is crafted from solid 0.800 silver, giving it substantial weight and presence. The case back is beautifully engraved with “Kaiserliche Marine” flanking a stylized Iron Cross motif that houses another U-boat emblem in its center.
Opening the inner dust cover reveals the meticulous hallmarks of the era: the German crescent moon and crown (Halbmond und Krone) silver marks, the 0.800 purity stamp, the maker’s hallmark, and the matching serial number 106974.
THE MOVEMENT At the heart of this historic timepiece is a complex, high-grade Swiss/German mechanical chronograph movement. As shown in the photographs, the movement is exceptionally clean, featuring exposed gears and meticulous finishing. It remains in perfect working condition—a testament to the engineering of the era and the care it has received over the last century.
CONDITION & APPRAISAL This timepiece is preserved in exceptional, perfect condition, especially considering its military provenance and age. The crystal is clear, the hinges are tight, and the complex chronograph functions operate exactly as they should. The watch carries an appraisal value of $3,500, representing a tremendous investment opportunity for serious collectors of esoteric military timepieces, horology enthusiasts, or historians of naval warfare.
